  • Carradale - Arran Cable Replacement

  • Project overview

Plans to replace a submarine electricity cable between Carradale in Kintyre to Arran on the West Coast of Arran is ongoing.

A routine inspection on the two 33kV submarine cables providing electricity to Arran was carried out in August 2017.

It revealed the north cable which runs from Port Crannaich in Carradale to Balliekine in Arran was in poor condition with significant damage to the protective armour- probably caused by contact with rocks.

The armour of the cable to the south  was intact so no further action was required.

Following an assessment by our engineers, it has been decided to replace the north cable because a repair would be challenging and more costly due to  its deep-water location and the extent of the damage observed.

Studies are ongoing to finalise the best route for the new cable.

    Stage 1

Carradale – Arran: Installation of 33kV electricity cable

We will shortly begin the replacement of the 33kV North submarine electricity cable which runs between Port na Cuile, Carradale and Balliekine, Arran.

As part of the development of this subsea cable installation project, we are seeking the views of local customers, communities and stakeholders.

In order to gather opinions and answer any questions, the Submarine Cable team will be holding a series of four hourly online engagement events. The sessions will be held between the following times:

    Time: 2pm to 6pm

    Date: Thursday 18th of March
